Oliver Fisher improved upon his first round of 67 with a second round effort of 65 to hold a share of the lead (-8) by a shot at the European Tour and Asian Tour co-sanctioned UBS Hong Kong Open. He is joined by Louis Oosthuizen, Chawalit Plaphol, and Oliver Wilson.
Wilson - who has a penchant for finishing in second place on Tour - was confident about his chances, saying, " I think a lot of people know I'm going to win soon, and it might as well be this one."
Defending champion Miguel Angel Jimenez is at even par, 8 out of the lead. The Mechanic made the cut on the number. He will have to pass much of the field to become a three-time champion of this event (2004, 2008).
History was also made right at the cut line. Fourteen year old Jason Hak of Florida (left) posted the same two round total of 140 as Jimenez and became the youngest player to make a cut in a European Tour sanctioned event.
The British Isles are well represented atop the leaderboard. Two are lurking very close to the lead, as Colin Montgomerie shot 65 to post -7. Rory McIlroy fired an even better 64 to begin the weekend at -6.
American John Daly, who will have a tumultuous 2009 schedule as he has no Tour status, repeated his first round score of 68 and is just four shots out of the lead. The two-time major winner discussed the impact of his struggles to find places to play. "[I]t's just been tough, because getting an exemption into one tournament, I need to play three or four weeks in a row to get anything out of my game," Daly said. "I haven't really been able to do that in two years."
