Among golf's four major championships, The Masters has enjoyed a monopoly on the coverage of a champions dinner -- that is, until next Tuesday.
The USGA will host a champions dinner for the first time ever at Merion Golf Club, just outside of Philadelphia. Golf Digest's Dave Shedloski first tweeted about the dinner on Feb. 9.
Lee Trevino, David Graham and Arnold Palmer will host the dinner. The first two won at Merion, Trevino beating Nicklaus in a playoff for the '71 U.S. Open and Graham winning the '81 U.S. Open. Jack Nicklaus was to be among the hosts, but will not attend, as he will be in Asia.
“To be in a room with all the previous U.S. Open champions and hear their stories of how they won this tournament will be really cool," said 2005 U.S. Open champion Michael Campbell in a report on iseekgolf.com. "To be in the company of the greats of the game will be pretty humbling.”
It's unclear who will attend aside from the three hosts but, according to the iseekgolf report, all living U.S. Open champions will be invited to attend.
