Phil Mickelson will compete in the PGA Tour's 2016-17 season opener, committing to play in the 2016 Safeway Open in Napa, Calif.

Tournament officials made the announcement, saying the five-time major winner will appear at Silverado Resort in October. This will be Mickelson's first appearance in the tournament formerly known as the Frys.com Open.

“I look forward to playing in the first Safeway Open,” he said in a release. “Amy and I love going to Napa, and now we have an even better reason to spend a week with the players and their wives.”

Mickelson has not played an October PGA Tour event since the 2007 Fry's Electronics Open in Scottsdale, Ariz. Back in 2013, Mickelson played in the CIMB Classic in Malaysia and the WGC-HSBC Champions in China, but he rarely takes on events on that portion of the schedule.

Emiliano Grillo is the defending champion of the event.
